1. Bastia, Corsica
Stay
About the destination: Bastia is a lively, cultural city in Corsica and the island’s main business and financial centre. It was the capital of Genoese administration in Corsica until the mid-18th century, and it has kept much of the architecture and atmosphere of that period, giving it a rugged, unpolished charm. At the same time, Bastia is unmistakably Mediterranean. The old quarter, known as the Terra Vecchia, is full of atmospheric streets, charming little shops and flamboyant Baroque churches. Highlights include the 15th‑century Oratoire St Roch, with its richly decorated Baroque interior and impressive organ, and Corsica’s largest church, the 17th‑century Saint‑Jean Baptiste Cathedral. In nearby Place du Marché, a flea market takes place every weekend. Around the Citadelle, the Terra Nova neighbourhood is one of the most colourful parts of town. Take time to wander among its restored houses and mansions. Stroll through the former grand gardens of the Palace of the Governors, Jardin Romieu, where you’ll have lovely views over the Vieux Port, the Old Port. The Vieux Port is one of the city’s most attractive areas, with tall, timeworn buildings surrounding a marina filled with sleek yachts. Corsica’s most successful commercial town is a lively and charming place with a fine port, distinctive architecture, good restaurants and a packed calendar of cultural events. Bastia offers far more than just sun and sea.

3. Ajaccio, Corsica
Stay
About the destination: Ajaccio is the capital of the French Mediterranean island of Corsica, set on the island’s west coast. It’s best known as the birthplace of Emperor Napoleon, and his presence is felt everywhere – from street names and squares to buildings and restaurants. Napoleon repaid his hometown by giving it its first sewer system, planting eucalyptus trees to drain the marshes, and elevating Ajaccio to the capital of Corsica. Ajaccio’s centre is compact and easy to explore on foot. The main shopping street is rue du Cardinal Fesch, home to a museum displaying the art collection gathered by Cardinal Joseph Fesch. Beside the museum stands the Imperial Chapel, built around 1860, which contains the tombs of Fesch and Napoleon’s parents. At the end of the street you reach Place Foch, where the town hall stands. This pretty square, once the site of the medieval town gate, is lined with cafés and restaurants and features a statue of Napoleon as First Consul above the Four Lions Fountain. Beyond Place Foch you’ll find the cathedral and Napoleon’s birthplace, now a museum. The Cathedral of La Madonuccia, dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin, dates from the late 16th century. Its main altar was gifted to the city by Elisa Baciocchi, Napoleon’s sister, who was baptised here in 1771. Ajaccio may be small, but it has a big heart and a strong sense of authenticity. Nature is never far away and, if you slow down and sink into the relaxed Mediterranean rhythm, you might just find yourself captivated by the place.

5. Porto-Vecchio, Corsica
Stay
About the destination: Porto-Vecchio, often dubbed the “St-Tropez of Corsica”, blends an upmarket marina vibe with rugged Mediterranean scenery. The old town, built around a 16th‑century Genoese citadel, sits on a hill above a glittering natural harbour. Its narrow lanes, stone houses, small shops and café terraces give it a cosy, intimate feel, especially in the evenings when the ramparts are lit up and live music drifts across the squares. Below the citadel, the busy marina is the social hub of Porto-Vecchio. Yachts and fishing boats share the quays, while seafront bars and restaurants serve fresh seafood, Corsican cured meats and local wines. It’s an ideal spot for a leisurely stroll at sunset or a relaxed dinner looking out over the masts and shimmering reflections on the water. Just a short drive away you’ll find some of Corsica’s best‑known beaches. Palombaggia charms visitors with its sweep of fine white sand, pink granite rocks and clear turquoise water, while Santa Giulia offers a sheltered lagoon that’s perfect for swimming, paddleboarding and family days out. Slightly wilder bays such as Tamaricciu and Cala Rossa reward those who venture a bit further along the coast. If you fancy a break from the sea, the inland countryside offers pine forests, rivers and mountain scenery. Day trips to the Ospedale Forest bring cooler air, sweeping views over the gulf and walking trails that range from gentle strolls to more challenging hikes. Whether you’re after lazy days on the beach, outdoor adventures or Corsican food and nightlife, Porto-Vecchio makes a compact base that captures the island’s varied appeal.
